I do something similar to this, but my receipe is 1 bar of Ivory, 1/2 cup of Borax and 1/2 cup of washing soda. I use 1 tablespoon per load. I have a new washer and it has a sensing before it does anything to sense how much clothes are in the washer. My question is.. there isnt a way of adding the detergent and water before the clothes are added. Will it still work if it was put in the compartment where laundry soap goes? Also i use a small grater its handheld (like a bigger microplane) and it shreds it very fine so i only takes time for the water to boil ti dissolve it. Also after it sits overnite i blend it up with my hand to break up the goo stuff. Just wonder if anyone has tried using an immersion blender to break up even more??

I just made my first batch of this and it seems as if it works well. But I have that old idea still stuck in my head that there has to be bubbles in order for it to be getting clean. When added to my top-loading washer, my water + laundry soap mixture looks almost clear (no bubbles at all). Is this normal?

THANK YOU!!! This recipe is the BEST. We do a LOT of laundry. Each of us has noticed that this liquid laundry soap gets our clothes cleaner than the store bought stuff. We have very hard well water so I add 1/2 cup to each load, plus I use distilled water to make this. Just love this laundry soap!

But we had no laundry soap. I headed down to the local Safeway, and went directly to the laundry aisle. But there were no good deals, and I got sticker shock. For some reason, all laundry soap has gone sky-high, and the usual large Tide we buy for our frontloader washing machine was more than $15! And that was on sale from about $20!

I also start making my own laundry powder recently. I learnt the recipes on the web which are mostly American. It is not easy to get the ingredients here in Hong Kong. I have to buy borax from Chinese Medicine stores (yes, you read it right). Washing soda from home supplies stores and there is no Fels-Naptha Soap here. But I found the FAN laundry soap works very well.

I am stoked to give this a try, but I am also very sensitive to mold and wondered if it would be good to find some sort of natural preservative to add to it. What do you think?
